School attendance is often emphasized because it is seen as a critical factor in student success and academic achievement. High school graduation followed by college enrollment and graduation are pivotal parameters to measure student’s academic and professional success. Attendance strongly affects standardized test scores, graduation and dropout rates (Balfanz, 2012). However, there are many factors that affect student achievement directly and indirectly at the secondary educational level. Lower attendance rates have been cited as detrimental to academic achievement; therefore, it is suggested that improved attendance is a direct indicator, rather than determinant of students’ academic achievement (Demir, 2016). The goal for this research project is to study and understand the trends from available open source data and to look for any correlation between absenteeism and high school graduation rate.
